For decades thousands of people have been sentenced absurd number of years for stealing even a goat or plantain.

the only reason these people are jailed is because they are poor. they are poor and can barely defend themselves like u and i CAN. WHERE ARE THE CHURCHES ? THE CHIEFS ? Academia? the GBA?

Unless for the sake of sensationalism, any reasonably educated person who reads the story will conclude that the offence in issue is ROBBERY and NOT STEALING.And in criminal proceeding and sentence, there is a world of difference between the two. The law in criminal trial is more concerned about the mode and manner of the commission of the offence, not the value of what was stolen or robbed. In this case, the story indicates that the convict used force and a cutlass to overpower the victim before taking the money and phone from her. So what's being punished is the serious nature of the offence, not the money and the value of the phone that was taken. Robbery is a serious offence. It is a first degree felony like rape and murder. Besides the story also shows that the convict and his gangs have been engaging in those acts for some time now. So what did you expect the judge to do? Learn wide and broaden your horizon so you know what you are talking about.

What kind of sentencing is this? Why? There is nothing to show that the man was sentenced before. The man must file an appeal. The appellate court will reduce it to 6 months unless he was charged for robbery

He wasn't sentenced for stealing....It was for robbery. The minimum sentence for robbery is 15 years, hence, the sentence isn't excessive
