The point is that it feels wrong, especially morally, to appoint as a minster of state someone who did not do national service as mandated by the laws governing the scheme! Even the laws debar such a person from being employed either in the public or private sector! However, it is being bandied about that a person over a certain age is exempt from doing national service. Still, the Minority in Parliament maintain that the appointment of the woman is illegal on the basis of her not having done national service. To have a closure on this issue, the Supreme Court's ruling on the case will be most welcome!
As to the argument that such a practice was ever done in the past, it bears no weight on the matter! If the practice is illegal, the fact that it ever occurred does not make it legal!
