Level 400, which suggest that the lady was a final year student. What is quiet obvious is that most final year students are mostly stressful especially when ones faith of successful completion of the final exam is oblique. And, believe you me, stress is the major cause of suicide. What students can do to stop some of these unfortunate incidence is to be on the lookout for friends who might be victims of stress, get close to them and offer them the moral support to keep on fighting. Advising such victims to see a doctor might also be helpful. I'm particularly saddened by this tearful incidence because an intimate friend of mine, Josiah Raindolf, alias Amadaa, killed himself in a similar fashion in KNUST when he jumped from the rooftop of Unity Hall, Blk B. Fact is that he told me he was going to kill himself and that the whole school would be mourning the next day. I took it as a joke and did not take him serious. And the next day Josiah who was loved by even our bitter rivals , the Abongo Boys in Katanga, jump from the rooftop to his death at midnight. I still feel guilty till date because I smelt of his death but could not do much to help him. He stop going to lectures at a point in time when we were about to write our final exams, and took to drinking. This should have triggered some of us to offer some help. Please be on the lookout because there are more sisters and brothers in our schools who are facing similar faiths. Your input can save lives in these trying moment.

This is and has always been the attitudes of everyone of you in campus. You seem to believe in yourselves thinking you came here along and so cares less about each other.

You see yourselves as grown ups and so can think for yourselves so you spurn advices from colleagues.

That same spirit which was on Campus at the time you were there is still around. And it is this which accounts for this lady's unfortunate situation.

I felt felt sad when I read your confession. A close friend revealed to you his intention to cause harm to himself and you thought it was a joke ?
When from your own writing you admitted that he stopped attending lectures and took to drinking. What other signs do you need to confirm what he told you he was going to do ?

Your advice is indeed a welcomed on. But go beyond this confession by organizing your gear group to get back to campus and give talks to those there.

There are several groups there. Alma maters , religious groups , social interest groups etc. find a way back to help. You overlooked your friend's remarks because you were young and self centered. It's not your fault and you are not alone. It is the spirit of the times. And it is still there.

So how do you conclude she jumped to her death? There's a serial killer out there who's craftily murdering innocent girls to make it look like a suicide. Look at what just happened at KNUST. As long as Ghana police is concerned the case is closed. All they will say is that investigation is ongoing. That's the end of that case. So will this one. But I know there's a serial killer out there. Everything points to it. But the clueless and lazy Ghana police will not do anything about it. Our girls need our prayers.

Why didn't her college mates report any unusual behavior to the university authorities as than bt students in America and other countries for her to get help. Where is the Minister of Health? What is our policy on mental health? What facilities are available for university students? Cornell University, which is one of the best schools in the world has the highest suicide rates among students. Counseling has to be part of the school facilities and students should be encouraged to talk to counselors when they are going through emotional and academic problems.

The problem we have in our country is that everything is seen through the prism of spiritism so a mental health issue that medication and counseling can manage evolves into a tragedy.

Even that the parents or immediate friends should have reported this incident to the authorities to find out why the change in behaviour, if solutions to human problems can't be found on the university campuses then are we safe as a country. It very pathetic. This is purely a psychological problem which should have been detected and treated to avoid this death.

For me the transitionp period more especially belted around the 18-23 needs close monitoring needs close monitoring to watch for any swinging mood.
The truth is they are under siege sort of academically and socially on the social front
1.Pressure from their perspective
2.Pressure from Peers
3.Pressure from what they see and hear outside
4.Pressure from electronic and print media
5. Pressure from Parents
Academically too sometimes difficulty in adjusting to take up critical thinking at age 18 and beyond!
What I suggest is socially we should be their best friends their parents and when we open up they will confess or give us a hint of any challenge.Colleagues in the universities must also watch out and inform authorities.The counselling services on campus must use whatever little resources to assist these youngsters further i proposed hotlines should be provided to avert further troubles.

Very sad.If indeed is true she is suffering from bipolar disorderand have not been attending lectures for some days,critical observation would have been useful.The various institutions at all levels should pay closer attention to few students who exhibit usual behaviour,isolation among others.These may be a pointer to underlyingpsychiatric disorders.Furthermore,the incidence of delibrate self harm(DSH) and suicidal tendencies is increasing worldwide.Just in few weeks,three incidence of suicide two being adolescent and the latest one today eluded both school authorities and parent.Suicide is becoming more prevelent in Ghana.A stitch in time saves nine.Kojo Pieterson Suicidologist
