Our university authorities should not wait till another incident like this happens. It appears our students need more professionally-trained counsellors to advise them on the rigours involved in studying in any university. Are we sure these JSS/SSS students are able to withstand the pressure involved in being forced to study subjects they do not have the talent for? This, coupled with most of them worrying about even where their next meal will come from, is enough to drive them crazy. Many of them are not matured enough to get through the university system. Isn't it time to bring back the A Levels so that better qualified and more matured students enter our universities? That excludes those whose parents have paid to get them admissions.

I couldn't agree with you more, Nkrumah. The number of mental cases with University students in alarming worldwide. However, in Ghana, people will easily blame supernatural powers just so nothing is done about trying to solve the problem. I developed countries, we invest a lot of money in student counseling to improve the mental health of university students, whereas we in Ghana will prefer to report about them and go on with our daily activities. Sad indeed.

They do not throw themselves from buildings. Severe depression causes you to do that. It's not simple. They need to be spotted early and treated

It saddens me that the youth of today do not have strong spirit to go through life and have taken to suiciding at the expense of trivial problem. What they have to embrace is that this world is full of problems and as humans we shall surely be faced with problems in life. Parents must strongly advice their children to take to God. Pastors and church elders of our various churches and institutions should refrain from overdependence of money and help these young ladies. All Ghanaian colleges or universities have failed Ghanaians because they are only interested in charging high tuition fees but have failed to employ expert counselors in the various campuses to assemble the youth for periodic advice and ideal truth of the world. If drastic measures are not taking swiftly, most of the young ladies would accept this bad suicidal attitude as the only solution to their woes. Oh youth of today, seek the face of God and stop having sex at tender age. Heartbroken is real but should one die because of sinful fornication? No.

You are right. After her initial psychotic episode, she made the boyfriend her "everything" (when she came back to school) and I believe the boyfriend became her source of metal stability thereafter. Therefore, after the cheating issue, she went back to her formal self (as evident from the retraction from her best friend). That is what made her suicidal. Her friend couldn't have figured this out, but it is really up to the universities to be doing more teachings and counseling sessions with the various departments for students to understand these mental problems and their repercussions.
