Nana was right. The independence movement did not start with Nkrumah. As an Engineering student in a polytechnic abroad, I was made to pick up courses in Outline History of Africa, World Civilizations and History of Technology, The history of Nok Culture, etc. In my history class, I read that independence movement actually started after the World War I. The African soldiers who fought alongside the British in trenches realised that the Whiteman is not next to God after all since they witnessed the whites dying miserably besides them and that wiped away the fear and respect accorded to them. Secondly, the humiliating defeat of the Brits by the Japanese in Singapore also raised questions about the superiority of the Great Britain. Other defiance activities like the Aba Women's movement and media warfare waged by veteran African politicians like Nnamdi Azikiwe, who was then domiciled in Accra, and JB Dankwa all contributed positively to the independence of Ghana and Africa as a whole. To isolate Nkrumah and bestow on him the sole achiever of Ghana's independence is very erroneous. I never attended any university but I think universities in Ghana are not teaching our youth well.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was only a 'traitor and a usurper'. He only came to consume what was already cooked, by the sweat and toil of the real Ghana's independent strugglers. The question is, if Dr. Nkrumah was the only freedom fighter in Ghana, why was he not jailed alone, by the colonial masters? He is one of the many freedom fighters, who got the Gold Coast out of colonialism, to independence. The work of Papa Grant, Dr. J.B Danquah and the other gallant 3, cannot be taken for granted, for the sake of the dictator, Kwame Nkrumah, with all due respect.

Whilst JB Danquah relied on a gentle tatics of "Self Govt- step by step", Nkrumah talked of a pragmatic and quicker radical approach of " Self Govt Now- by positive action".B'cos of
that ideological difference,Nkrumah had to part ways with the United Gold Coast Convention(UGCC)to formed the Convention Peoples Party(CPP). And Danquah, formed the United Party (UP- also known as:Ma te meho). Majority of the UGCC Bigwigs went to Nkrumah- Camp.Therefore,there was not UGCC,or,it Collasped after those developments.Later,the Colonial Govt conducted two mock referendums at separate times to test the readiness of the people of Gold Coast to "Self Govt"
In all two,Nkrumah(CPP)won a massive landslide Victory over Danquah(UP). Nkrumah(CPP) was in Prison then,b'cos he instigated the people of Gold Coast to Civil -Disobedience-strikes,looting(positive action),etc,etc.To make a long story short, the question is: why do more than one person participate in a Competition but,only one person is awarded the Gold Medal/Cup!.
Nkrumah won the "Gold" whether we like it or not.No matter how others attempt to rewrite history to supressed Nkrumah's role to Independence or "Self Govt" as it was then called. For, what is the meaning of "the 6th of the Big Five was to join them later". To join them in the Picture or where?.

To me, Komla Gbedema must be placed on the same level or even higher than JB (do not get me wrong, JB is a freedom fighter and must be recognized like all others, like Padmore). When the going got tougher, it was folks like Gbedema that stood with Kwame, while others like JB and uncle Busia were trying to pull Kwame down. Now some want to give them the ultimate credit?
