I'm a direct child/product of Ankaful Psychiatric hospital and I must say that government upon government have been insensitive to the cry of the mentally ill as mental health workers. The facility has virtually run out of all consumables: No food, good drinking water, mattress to sleep on, simple lab reagents are non existent, I can go on and on. If government wants to continue to make mental health services free, then it must be committed to providing the basic needs of these our brothers and sisters. It is frustrating working in a neglected place! At worst, we run out of medications. This is unacceptable! The safety of workers and patients are not guaranteed.
This years budget alone, government is spending Ghc1.5bn just for the presidency. Did you hear that? I mean a whopping Ghc1.5bn for the presidency alone. That sounds outrageous, right? Without malice or ill will to this current government, this is what previous governments have been doing; paying more attention to their comfort and emoluments to the neglect of the mentally ill.
I know Nana Addo will perform better than previous governments and I sincerely trust he will not shy away from helping the mental health sector.
God bless our homeland Ghana and make it great and strong!
