Her death is very unfortunate. Such patients are not to be left alone by themselves. When they are alone they find they time to think and indulge in self pity. The parents should not have allowed her to live on campus.

Lesson: Parents should always try to know what their children are doing. Even if your child visits home every weekend, do find time to also visit him/her on campus unannounced on a week day. Enter his/her room and spend about 10 minutes with them and their roommates or friends. It will give you insight into who their friends are and whether they live a double life. even the items in their rooms will tell you something.

It is time the mental health services in Ghana embark on outreach programmes to educate the public on mental health illnesses disorders. Lack of knowledge about the causes of mental disorders in the society is not helping people to deal with the problem. About 90% of the Ghanaian population believe mental illnesses are caused by spiritual forces, eg witchcraft, demons, or curses. Little do they know that, most mental illnesses are caused by biological, social and psychological factors. Depression for example, is caused by social and psychological factors. People get depressed as a result of negative events going on in their lives, eg, lack of job, family problems, divorce, bereavement etc. Some of the symptoms of depression are feeling hopelessness, isolation, suicidal. People with severe depression think they are not worth living and have 80% chance of killing themselves. We have to be aware of these simple facts and offer people help in these situations. Now situations are getting harder and harder with regards to our finances and family dynamics, as a result most people are likely to get depressed and the risk of committing suicide will increase. Education is important to help people manage these situations if they arise.

How valid is the diagnosis and what is he basis of it? Even if she was actually depressed how did the psychiatrist establish the efficacy of the prescribed drug/drugs for treating the specific illness she was suffering from? If she is now said to have been depressed do the university authorities have any measures in place to intervene and stop such needless incidents? I am sad for her family and other families who will suffer at the hands of experimental drugging in the name of psychiatry?
