  while this initiative is commendable and the diagnosis of lack reading as one of the factors undermining education and literacy, the use of book donations to build libraries in communities is misguided. This is part of the problem, we do not think through our problems deeply but are always seeking ad hoc short term solutions.
  Good libraries are not necessarily made up of, a space filled shelves and books. We either get these communities proper information resource centers (the new term for libraries) filled with well balanced stock, modern technology, and well staffed by individuals who can manage such facilities with long term sustainability. The idea of going to publishers, NGOs and stakeholder for donations is an outmoded model for solving this problem. Publishers are in the business of selling books and the idea that they should be donating books to every Tom Dick and Harry who is a celebrity for their library project is proposterous. We might as well go to the restaurants in the country and ask them to supply free food to the hungry in the country. This uncoordinated approach to building libraries is duplicitous and ends up with pseudo libraries that become unsustainable small white elephants. I will advise the celebrity to direct the efforts at helping the Ghana Library board fulfill their difficult mandate due to the lack of adequate resource. Such efforts are great for the camera opportunities for celebrities but difficult to sustain.
