Here is a man who was a visiting professor of history to universities throughout the world and also a consultant to UNESCO. Reading history for a first degree does not make anyone poor, because one could go in for an MBA, MPA degree with a very good class. One could also go in to read Law at the Ghana Law School and become a lawyer. This fib can only be told to lazy MPs who are not prepared to investigate for the truth. I know many administrators and even bank managers, magistrates and top office holders who read Greeko-Roman civilization for their first degree. How sad!

He was by means a poor man financially. May be poor in spirit.

Your father must be turning around in his grace because of this useless statement made by you just to get a position in government. You’ve shown gross disrespect to your father. Total shame.

First, your father was NEVER broke. He was a very successful and ‘rich’ university professor who lived an honest non-corrupting life. When I first encountered Prof. Boahen as a student at Legon…at the Department of History, Prof has his own top of the line Volvo…with his own chauffeured driver. He had written numerous books and articles, and continued to write. His services as one of the foremost historians of his generation, was sought after by universities throughout the world. He lectured at universities on every continent. Prof was NOT and NEVER broke.

What this boy just said about his father, speaks to the corrupting and corruptive nature of the Ghanaian discourse.

In Ghana, one becomes rich by actually stealing from government coffers. Professor Boahen NEVER stole from government coffers. Professions where stealing from the public treasury is not available are deemed as ‘poor.’

When he received his PH.D, he could have joined Nkrumah’s government…become a Minister…with FREE everything: housing; cars; attendants at his whim; etc. It is these thieves who serve as ministers of government that people wish to imitate. But he chose a more respectable humble path. Nobody can say Adu Boahen ‘ate’ a pesewa that he did not make himself.

If your father suggested to you not to make a profession as a History Professor, (assuming you made the grade), perhaps he was merely advising you to branch into other fields.

In fact, Adu Boahen made so much money from his books published by Longmans, and placed Longmans among the top, that Longmans later built a big house free for the Prof. I believe it’s located at East Legon.

This boy needs to apologize to his brother Kwabena who teaches at A top American university.

By becoming a minister, you have chosen the path of being a welfare recipient. From now on, all your needs will be taken care of by the Ghana government…. and THAT, will reckon you as being rich. Your father did not choose that path.

Respect him for that. And respect him for the rich upbringing he gave you and your siblings.
