At the banking hall, I was seated by a gentleman from Switzerland and has hospitable as Ghanaians are the gentleman has experienced it with the short time stay here in Ghana and was trying to put me in chat as to how the feeling was after such a fantastic reception from some Ghanaians he met.
Our conversation got to a point that I needed to describe Ghana my beloved country but just as I was about thinking of what to say the teller called me and needed to end it there…..
Upon exiting the banking hall after my transaction, I started asking myself how I would have described Ghana to the Swiss who couldn’t have said less about Switzerland without at least mentioning the best chocolate in the world.
I looked through, thought through, analysed and bow my head to shame because my country couldn’t have been described well with pride.
In my country we use refuse popularly known as -b)la- for decoration, on our ceremonial streets are decorations of such menace from people who do not appreciate beauty…taken the George Walker Bush street as example and many other places.
In my country are self-acclaimed men of God who sell all forms of concoctions to the less privileged and frustrated ones who fall prey to their activities just to amass wealth to themselves.
In my country, which once had moral standard whereby the young greets every adult where necessary and gave the seat out to show respect is no longer like that with the reason being that the adult who used to have a responsibly exemplary life by even hiding to smoke and drink now sit on the same bench with the younger generation to drink and smoke with them.
In my country is where products and personality sell and gain fame respectively based on mere rumor; we call it ‘’ak3ak3” ……’’y3sey3s3’’ etc. It has given platform to many to influence and pollute the society with fictions of life.
It’s only in my country where people vote a government in power and later on dictates who should be appointed to which office if not done they take the law into their own hands.
In my country political parties have their special security forces who have the audacity to fight back rule of law and administrative justice with impunity just because their government is in power and this has been with successive governance; interestingly these forces have some funny names you can call it terroristic names to recognize themselves.
In my country is where expatriates come in and disrespect the majority by polluting our water bodies because some selfish greedy bastards sell our pride and integrity just for some few money to feed them till their death, what happens to the future generation is their back case…they call it galamsey .
In my country is an easy access to job; TALKING ON RADIO to insult the young, old, men and women, the clergy, chiefs and opinion leaders and you are paid for such an easy and cheap job…it pays more than the lazy man’s investment like investing in treasury bill. We talk all day with little or no action at all.
In my country you can learn to pass your exam which the question demands you to differentiate between PROACTIVE AND REACTIVE just because you will see a typical example once you step here, we wait for things to happen before we act….WE ARE A REACTIVE PEOPLE.
In my country you can’t ever fail to give the meaning of idiomatic expression -A NINE-DAY WONDER- just because apart from being A REACTIVE PEOPLE we talk about everything, make noise about them and forget within a matter of time, if you doubt wait for there to be heavy down pour of rains and you will understand me.
In my country the less privileged is always branded with witchcraft and the affluent are free from such embarrassment, there is even witch camp where some senior citizens who are less fortunate are ostracised to be camp there just because they are said to be in possession of witchcraft…who speaks for the poor? Oh my country Ghana was once GOLD COAST just because you could easily see and find gold around, my granny used to tell me, you could easily find gold stones around and they used to play with them as kids.
We didn’t seem to know the use of the gold till the Whiteman located our beautiful geographical environment where nature was real and beautiful with trees and different kinds of plants.
Interestingly, our own people sold our resources for tobacco and white man’s schnapps as the tour guide told us during my last domestic tourist visit to the cape coast and Elmina castle.
The gluttony has plagued into us from Adam and today we are still suffering for it WHO WATCHES THE WATHCMAN?
Do we blame the Chinese for allegedly destroying our water bodies, when some leaders in our villages and some supposed to know affluent are selling the lands to them and leading them to engage in the small scale mining? Franklin Benjamin was absolutely right to have said that an ‘’Illiterate may steal from a train but a university graduate will take the whole rail away’’
My country wouldn’t have been described well not because I am daft rather it was difficult to merit it the good GOLD COAST where our patriotism was on top till voracity stepped in the minds of some people.
