What is wrong with up-coming engineers like our students sourcing component parts to produce a new device. The important thing is being able to make a usable product.

A few days ago, there was a story about a 400MW gas power station to be built in Tema which was hailed as the world's largest, when countries like Japan have natural gas power plants with well in excess of 3500MW generating capacity. And today, we are bragging about KNUST developing the world's first open space fire detector.

Whereas we as Ghanaians must feel elated when our schools of higher learning develop products on the world stage, we have to be careful not to exaggerate our claims. Thankfully, Ghana is now an oil producing country with a lot of refineries and pipelines and stakeholders of such establishments will not leave their capital-intensive assets to nature for protection. There are a lot of heat and smoke detectors all over such properties, including audible and visual alarms. So this idea of word's first is a bit ridiculous.
