Ghanaians are generally afraid of any person in military uniform. Conversely, even a weakling in military uniform believes that he is more powerful than ten civilians, because they wouldn't dare to confront him for wayward behaviour. The military is considered to be a noble and respected vocation. I lived in Botswana for some time, and I was always impressed with how the people of that country loved and respected their military personnel. Botswana soldiers are hardly seen in public, except mainly on month ends, when they would come downtown from the barracks, to do their shopping. It is rare to see or hear of a soldier misbehaving in public. These are professionally trained, patriotic soldiers, conscious of their main responsibility to protect and defend their country, but not to brutalise defenceless civilians. Similarly, in Ghana there are many respectable, professional military personnel, in paticular, among the officer corps, who uphold the dignity of the military. However, some soldiers consider themselves as demigods. Some of these soldiers have never come under enemy fire, and have not even experienced peacekeeping operations. Yet they strut around, behaving that they are the bravest, beating up the people they have been trained to protect. We are now being governed under a Constitution, under the rule of law, and not under a military junta. It is therefore the responsibility of the relevant authorities, to ensure that this particular soldier, who has brought the military into disrepute, is subjected to the appropriate sanctions, including a dishonourable discharge from the military, as well as criminal prosecution. To the victim of this abuse, my advice is: seek legal counsel immediately.

Soldiers have no law enforcement authority, therefore there's no reason why this soldier should be meting out this punishment to a civilian outside the barracks. This soldier should be locked up in the guardroom for a couple of weeks as punishment .

Our troops should not be peace keepers, period. leave that to the police forces. Soldiers are created to fight, kill and win battles. Not to go about metering out corporeal punishment at whim. We simply don't know what to do with our troops. Their sole purpose should be to preserve the constitution and territorial integrity of Ghana with lethal force.With added training they can be used to ensure Ecowas regional security and integrity; again with efficient, lethal force. All that Boko Haram, and insurgents issues should be their purview. Not whip small boys in The streets like some old headmaster. Our soldiers, sailors and airmen must be made a lethal, independent (of foreign forces) fighting force. Not some glorified UN watch men. We don't understand the mindset of fighting men and women. That is the problem.
