Plastics cannot be banned in this era where we want to be processing and storing water, food etc for use. What we should bet thinking of is the collection of such materials for recycling purposes.

Kudos to the AMA. At least its a good start but we ourselves should respect ourselves. Lets not be damping mercilessly. Those of us who see others doing that should ask then to pick then back or report then for the laws to work on them. In so doing, Ghana will be a better place like never before. Lets not use party issues on this. Lets all work together as one family. Long Live Ghana!!!

For effective waste management in Accra and therefore the major urban centers, one of the first steps required in addressing the challenge include categorization of domestic and industrial waste into various types. There must also be the requirement that patrons and clients use separate specific dustbins for the different categories.
Plastics should be one category. Metals should be another. Broken glasses should be a third. Rubber--vehicle tyres should be another.
Organic stuff should be the last. Organic stuff should include food leftovers - fruits, vegetables, leaves- shrubs, wood, branches from gardens, homes, groceries, markets etc.
There should be different arrangements for waste collection, sorting out, treatment and disposal.
There must be different dumping sites -immediate and intermediate points, sub stations , citywide locations, district, regional and even national points for such dumping, processing and treatment. Yes. Some wastes can be toxic , so toxic that special places may be required for their burial away from water sources. Waste handling requires proper training, equipment, gear, storage facilities.
Some waste is another person's valuable inputs. Waste can be useful. Waste processing can be very decent, healthy environmentally friendly endeavours. Waste can be wealth. Waste dumping sites need not always be smelly, smoke-filled.
Waste-processing can be included in the one town, one factory models.
It means that some clients and patrons must be paid for the waste they "generate".
Waste collection has to be linked with industry and commerce, science and technology. There can be very many final products from processed waste. Waste can be commodities. Waste management etc must be lead waste exchanges. Waste can be and must be traded eventually. Waste products can be standardized and can become fungible. They can become international. Right now in Ghana, there are some wastes that get shipped to destinations outside Ghana.
Therefore, waste business requires more investors and entrepreneurs. It is very much also a multi-disciplinary
activity.
I encourage all and sundry- policy makers, political leaders, captains of industry, finance buffs, the youth, men, women to be interested in the subject of waste management and disposal.
