All the comments so far are from social commentators who don't have the professional know-how to do so. This is what has been done in the past and the problem is still lingering on. Why is it that when there are any political issues journalists quickly call lecturers in the political science departments of our various public universities to seek their opinions? The same applies to legal issues where we see legal experts falling head-over-heels trying to champion their individual legal opinions to tackle issues that deal with the law. How come that when there is a challenge with mining, the opinions of the mining experts are not sought but rather we allow social commentator, who mostly have backgrounds in the arts and humanities, to do all the talking . The solution to the Galamsey menace is in the bosom of the Mining Engineer and, in fact, besides being the oldest profession after agriculturists, they are the only professionals in the world who are trained as the ‘Jacks of all trades and masters of all’ and so have the ability to provide solutions to the Galamsey menace. It is time to involve these mining professionals to find a lasting solution - not a political or artistic solution - to the Galamsey problem.

Sure as the Ambasador says there are Institutional challenges that must be fixed? :
1 immigration laws and enforcement.
2. Mining Commission permitting laws
3. Environmental Protection laws
4.Land use laws
5 .Laws enforcement, Policing and Judical administration,
6. Small scale mining education and technology,
7. Parliament to make and pass laws that truly encourage legitimate mining big and small that won't damage our environment and water bodies.
These are what the Ambasador is talking about.
If a community is strong , no enemy from outside can come destroy us. We need to put our house in order with the appropriate laws, activity management, and an uncompromising enforcement regime and we would be fine. The criminals , foreign or local would be caught and apprehended before they do any lasting damage to us
I think our leaders and governments have done a poor job of communicating the real issues to the public. Their objective is not to stop exploitation of our mineral resources? It provides employment. ?What I think government must clearly communicate is that we want mining activities that won't destroy our environment and water bodies. And here are the rules of engagement. So Hon. Hamid , EDUCATE don't react?! There must be surely something wrong with our institutions if foreigners can operate with impunity for what they have been alleged to be doing ? If our environment and water bodies are important for us then strengthen the institutions charged to protect them with laws , resources and enforcement regimes to do that job. What we are seeing from galamsey is a gaping whole of institutional weakness. The Chinese are not our problem. The problem is us.
