###SOURCE: CLASSFMONLINE ------ The Government of Ghana is reviewing the debts incurred by the John Mahama administration to find out whether the loans were used for the purposes of which they were contracted, Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Marfo, has revealed. After the review of the debt situation, the findings will be made public to enable the Ghanaian people realise how their moneys were spent by the previous administration, Mr Marfo added. It is recalled that during the electioneering season the then main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) accused the Mahama government of excessive borrowing but with little to show for, an assertion the then governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) rubbished because they thought they had embarked on several infrastructural projects with those loans. Mr Marfo speaking during the National Policy Summit on Tuesday May 16 said revealed that the new government is investigating all the debts left behind by Mr Mahama. “We are working on the numbers, the ministry of finance gives us the bulk numbers. But they do not all emanate from one source, we have some sitting in energy, some sitting in SSNIT and we are examining all. As a government and we are doing it gradually and slowly because we must be accurate. “We want to be sure that whatever comes out finally is accurate. The government owes it as a duty to keep the nation informed about these debts and what it was used for.”

If they were recognised as a mining company then the military protection the applied for was in order afyer all the big mining companys do same. If they were illigal miners then that would be different. the only offence is they exceeding the number of acres granted them but thats the responsinility of the minirals commission and they failed to live up to the task of monitoring them. that can not be blamed on JM or defence minister.

In our uninformed zeal to tackle the menace, we are targeting even genuine investors who came into the country, applied for and got concessions to do medium scale mining, and a paying their taxes and royalties accordingly. What we are doing now is being seriously watched by the International community, and may affect future investment drive in not only the minerals industry, but other areas we may need foreign capital injection. The global need for investors is quite competitive, and investors will not like to go to a place where ministers and the citizenry will demonize everyone, flout agreements and try to justify their actions by criminalizing people for political gains. Yes, let's fight Galamsey, and I mean Galamsey and not lump them with genuine small and medium scale miners into one gold. Dr Kumbuor will not have authorized for protection for gslamseyers, but for genuine mining companies who, like we all know, are always attacked and harassed by armed robbers and local hoodlums. We must be careful in our overzealousness to fight Galamsey, lest we send wrong signals to investors, and give advantage to our competitors in this competitive global economic environment. I know that the empty-headed lunatics lunatics will attack any fair-minded person who cherishes the rule of law, reasonableness, fairness and the need for investment drive, and thus cautions us to tread cautiously as we try to fight illegal activities including Galamsey, in order that we will build our economy in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
