I dont get how changing the regulation for a 30 year old to join the military jeopardises the country. In UK you will be able to join the regular infantry till you are 33 years old (the max joining age is even extended if you are joining as a reserve). A full service in the British army is 22 years. This means a late joiner will still be young enough - 55yrs - to pursue other things if they so choose after leaving service life. So if a country with one of the best militaries in the world is doing this and it has not affected the performance of their military, in what way can herald's argument be valid. The writer of this article knows little abt the military or has been talking to conservative military personnel who are against any change to the status quo whatsoever. Changing the age is a progressive measure, not a bad one rather.

The issue is that, there's a pattern, that, any article with a sensational title, critical of the NPP, emanates from the Herald, Alhaj or the Informer tabloids. How many soldiers did this tabloid interview, to arrive at the sweeping conclusion it made? Let the tabloid you are defending, produce: the methodology of its research; the branches of the armed forces among whom the research was conducted; the number of soldiers sampled; and; those in favour and those opposed to the extension of years among the number sampled. If it does this, then there will be room for intellectual debate, and it's conclusion can stand up to scrutiny. In the absence of credible research, the conclusion of the newspaper, which appears to be the mouthpiece of the NDC, (like the Alhaj and the Informer), is not credible. Tabloids are not necessarily interested in the truth, but rather depend on sensational articles, to improve dwindling sales. It is therefore unwise to take everything you read in tabloids at face value.

You're spot on, I think the NPP came up with the ideas for these changes after having an intense consultations with the rank and files of the Ghana Armed Forces. The reality is that these pro NDC news tabloids always come up with these fallacies to energize their support base because these people are in low spirits after they were decimated by the NPP in the 2016 general elections. Ordinarily, it would be very hard for any western or an advanced News Tabloids to make these assertions; without any sampling or a comprehensive studies and consultations with the Armed Forces, but as I always say that the NDC and its fraternities thrive and dwell on propaganda. The only provisions that needs to be considered by the Parliament is to create an avenue for a possibility of a voluntary retirement, just like the US and other advanced military forces around the world. The voluntary retirement options will make it possible for the soldiers to make a choice to serve their maximum term or to opt out with the same or similar retirement packages.

Officers O5 Commander can do 30 , O6 Navy Captain can go all the way to 35yrs and the Flag Officers O7- O10 Admiral can do up to 45yrs. That's the facts.

Well Ghana is not U.S. but we are practicing Democracy which was copied from U.S. and Britain. Just like I mentioned, the time limit in the U.S. Military is not compulsory which means one can do the minimum 20 years and retire whilst someone can decide to stay longer so I think that by doing that extension it will afford those who want to stay a little bit longer the opportunity to serve their country more. As E7 in U.S. Navy I can serve up to 24 years or I can decide to retire at 20. Remember the more people stay in the Service the more they have experience and smart Military is not about Physique but experience to make intelligent decisions. Please calm down Ghana needs experience Military but not physically fit Military in 21st Centaury complex tactical operations. Thanks

Your info gives the detailed breakdown of US army practice. It's not every officer who can do 45 years and be in service at 63 if he joined the army at 18. What is the equivalent situation in the Ghanaian army?

The US govt pension age for civilians is 65. In Ghana, it is 60.

We have to tailor the situation to our needs. Perhaps the government's proposal is good but not because we have to the take the lead from US practice.

The US accepts foreigners into its army. Should we also start accepting foreign born persons into our army?

I still think the Ghanaian situation is different. For one thing, Ghana is not fighting the type of wars the US is fighting and preparing to fight. Even though our army should be a good army, the prospects of their fighting a defensive or aggressive war is not at all the same as that of the USA.

So, yes, we can learn from US practice but this is not a situation in which it is clear that what the US army does will be good for the Ghanaian army too. After all, the democracy we have now has been based on what obtains in the West but it is by no means a copy cat of that.

The government must justify its age extension purely on its merits not because it has to fulfill a campaign promise or look to the practice in the US. That is basically my point.

A soldier can serve up to the age of 60 years and when you begin to retire your soldiers at a tender age of between the age of 40 and 45 years is more dangerous and doesn't serve any perpose. And to those who are thinking of coup in Ghana must be careful with their thinking else it will turn and bite them hard. NDC shouldn't think of coup else they will run and leave their family. Today, a soldier is recruited at an average age of 23 years. Serving for 25 years, the soldier will need to exit the service at 48 years. A soldier is not permitted to marry but concentrate on his job till the end of his or her first 3 years of service. If a soldier marries in his 4th or 5th year and gives birth in the 6th year, at the end of his 25 years, the child will be 19 years. This is the first child not to think about the second and subsequent ones. Using Ghana's education system, a 19 year old child will be in the Senior High School or probably first year in the university. A soldier exiting at the end of his or her 25 years will now be forced to work to cater for the children. The military had a system that it would have aided the resettlement of troops exiting the service but unfortunately, the current unemployment situation in Ghana and around the world makes it difficult for the military to assist with the resettlement of its retiring troops. The extension of the 25 years to 30 years is not a bad idea considering the issues raised above. It should however be noted that, no soldier is bonded to serve for the 25 years. A soldier can retire after 15 years of service once the person feels comfortable. The government will need to improve the facilities within the barracks to ensue that measures are in place to ensure regular recruitment

First of all the NPP govt shd lessen the huge disparity bn officers & other ranks in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). That way they will woo thousands of other ranks to their side in the long term something which was overlooked by previous govts. The 25yrs to 30yrs is good for the country especially as there were no jobs to absorb thousands of already retired other ranks further creating unemployment. The Herald newspaper, a mouthpiece of retired officers alleged that soldiers will be too tired, weak & afraid to serve in any war. That's not true. Ever heard of retired soldiers or reserves being recalled to serve at the war front and they gladly did? Have our officers forgotten about Ghanaian soldiers being recalled to serve in Cambodia and they gladly did? Then how come serving soldiers would be too weak to serve while in the service?
Besides, combative force is normally picked from Private soldier to Staff-Sergeant (20 - 40yr olds). Soldiers above 40 yrs were made supervisors b'cos they are Warrant Officers(WO's).
The GAF do not plan for retiring other ranks unlike dev countries where outsourcing for security jobs for civil companies were provided for retired soldiers. It is never the case in Ghana so military pensioners stay at home without jobs. The pension fracas bn the previous govt & the retired other ranks (officers were paid in full so they were not involved ) was b'cos of the deep corruption entrenched in the military especially in the senior officers.I mean nobody checks them and they are accountable to nobody. To bring sanity into the GAF, the president should make sure that the archaic GAF rules are changed to reflect modern times. For instance, why shd Officers serve in the military till they reach age 60 while other ranks can only serve for 25 yrs and go home ? Officers have career planning whilst in the service - introduced by they themselves - whilst other ranks have no career planning.
Officers retire on their salaries, meaning they enjoy those salaries until they die, while other ranks are left to their own fate after retirement.
Additional yrs will not collapse the GAF & will not pose any security threats to the country. We are all military personnel therefore if other ranks are going out at 25 or 30 yrs, officers shd also go out as well so that when the country is recruiting more other ranks for the military they can recruit more officers as well. There's too much disparity and cheating in the Ghana Armed Forces and I believe President Akufo-Addo and bring about sanity to restore confidence.

I was a young soldier then and any soldier who took part in that operation know that had it not been for the guidance of the old soldiers we couldn't? have won that war. ABF Ghana team up with the Nigerian parachute Battalion to fight that War, and the Nigerian were far more older than us.

The suject here is strategic not an ordinary. The military, and for that matter the army is instituted to first and foremost defend the constitution of the land. Therefore, service members need to technically and tactically proficient enough to perform their duties. The army always needs fresh blood, new ideas, fit to fight bodies who are capable to meet the physical demands of war etc.If service members are allowed stay that long, it will create laxity among the old folks since they only occupy their positions for a big pay check and no longer interested in the job. It will also prevent the government from recruiting some of the young and talented ones who want to contribute their quotas. I humbly urge the good people of Ghana not to politicise this subject. It's a very serious subject that needs to be critically deliberated. Thanks.

I strongly kick against that decision because if a soldier with a the rank of ssgt ( 18yrs in service) complains of Basic fitness test then I wonder at age 30 what he will say. And all of us knows that soldiering is physic hmmm God should save our nation. If 25yr u could not do anything meaningful in your life then the additional 5yrs will not change anything. You will not bargain for better conditions of service low interest loans to assist build your houses you are requesting for extension of years in service poor thinking ORs.

The idea is detriment to youth employment, shut opportunity or youth economic empowerment,etc,in my personal opinion.Therefore,the idea seems humane and nice on paper but a economic disaster in practice at this time; not prudent Economic Structures is put in place yet,since power was wrestled from the NDC by the NPP,only some few months ago.That means unless the Country has huge Reserves not in Military personnel but Money in the Treasury(BoG),which I doubt,the idea of extension of Honorable Discharge from 25 to 30 years is not Sustainable now; and will subject the Economy to unnecessary fiscal pressures,in my personal opinion. The powers that be do not need an Expert or any Academic levels in whatever to tell them that.Again,It's mandatory that,a recruit go through rigorous Military Training required by Military Standards(fitness) before finally enlisted in the Army.And a Soldier takes Command from the Superior or Commander to Act in ordinary cases.Therefore,experience is much needed at the Officers Levels. Politicians could promise Heavens on Earth to get elected without knowing how to pay for implementation or the Economic implications of some hollow Campaign promises made.Therefore, not all Campaign promises has to be carried out without it being criticaly and thoroughly scrutinized under Economic Microscope.Lastly, it's laughable and completely out of place for anyone to Compare the Ghana Army to the Structures of the US Army; Considering the Global obligations, responsibilities and contributions towards World Peace of the latter. Which War(civil,etc) has the Ghanaian Soldier ever fought!.What is on record is: Disgruntled, Greed and Senseless Cheap Coups which only reqirement is weed somked at dawn,topped with Akpeteshie (local gin) to the Broadcasting Station to announce to the nation, toppled Democratically elected Govt, intimidated their own people they claimed to rescue,caused atrocious crimes, mess up the economy to introduced more hardships,etc. Give us a break!. The Youth must be enlisted. That's the way forward.
