In other words the dynamics in the interplay of demand and supply in the labor market has to determine the quantity, depth, quality and appropriateness of skills and education acquired in the universities/educational institutions in Ghana.

Mass production of University and polytechnic professionals is a recipe for disaster as exhibited in this case and the Minister and NPP have no clue!

Tech Uni per se cannot generate jobs.
Job creation emerges from entrepreneurship with understanding a business idea plan and its operations to satisfy the target market customers.

One district, one factory is a mere political slogan which cannot per se create jobs, unless entrepreneurs intervene with definite business idea plan with its operation and financial plans.

African university graduates and politicians lack that education. The solution is to start from the scratch and move on from that foundation to build our industries and commerce led by the new African entrepreneurs with a defined business idea plan.

One idea successfully implemented in the US is a training program with guaranteed internship ("attachment") placement.

Typically, it is a 3-month program, with courses taught by people from industry, including hiring managers. There could be as many as twenty intructors involved in the 3-month program. There are weekly practical sessions during which students apply their knowledge in real time.

At the end, there is a certificate-awarding exam, followed by interviews by industry hiring managers for internships internships.

Now the downside: such programs are very expensive, some costing as much as $4,000 a month. Yet, applications get sold out in matter of HOURS!

We hear the attraction is the guaranteed internship, the best channel for full employment. In fact, in some programs, job placement rate is 100%.

Unfortunately, this would only benefit the wealthy. But here is where the government can step in to provide loans and even scholarships for deserving students.

We hear the attraction is the guaranteed internship, the best channel for full employment. In fact, in some programs, job placement rate is 100%.

African Entrepreneurs must intervene with their readiness to bear the costs of placement training programme
with Government contribution to costs.

Finally in the real world in which we live, loans could be given to the students to be paid through their employers after the placement training on substantial salary.

UK graduates have no problem in repaying their student loans, because they are gainfully employed on substantial salary after graduation.

What's the difference between a technical university and polytechnic? The polytechnics were to accommodate technical and vocational students, but they lost their focus and concentrated on admitting shs graduates to pursue programmes like hnd marketing, accountancy, hospitality management and so on. So Prof come again. I think the problem is with the availability of jobs and not lack of required skills.

Technical universities etc. I humbly say that what the Prof has said will not necessarily reduce unemployment. What have studies in technical secondary schools done for the economy?
I was in a Tech school many years ago as part of a group on retreat for about 4 days.
The dormitory we slept in had a water tap with a faulty leaking faucet. It leaked for the entire period we were there. When we investigated, we heard horrible stories.
The Government does not provide enough budgets to hire master artisans or to buy basic materials to teach the artisanal subjects. So the students don't acquire the skills or knowledge.
The situation was so bad that for those "studying" carpentry for example, at the end of the semesters, they just buy finished pieces of work from carpenters shops outside , which they present as their work for exams and grades.
I served on University of Ghana council for a number of years. The experience was that for recurrent budget-- salaries etc--, payments by the Government typically always fell short by 3% per annum. That apart from not fully even staff salaries, left nothing for teaching materials etc. This is what led to the imposition of all sorts of bills by universities on students.
Then there is always the problem of teaching subjects and conducting abstract researches that were irrelevant to needs of the economy or are not well publicized amongst industry science and technology and especially entrepreneurs. There must be a link between the gown and the town! Else, nothing will change. Let us teach life skills and seemingly DIY courses.
The Training Colleges that our grand parents went in the 19th and 20th centuries, they learnt masonry work, carpentry etc etc. Our grand parents had practical skills which they used in life. Let Governments back these laudable ideas with enough resources or let them invite private participation into these academic institutions.
