COURTESY: CLASSFMONLINE.COM ----- The various corruption allegations surfacing are proof that the Mahama administration was far more corrupt than previously thought, former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Prof Stephen Adei has said at a Business Roundtable organised by Yamson and Associates in Accra on Wednesday, 31 May. “Do you know why many people want to be politicians? It’s because that is the quickest way to get rich in this country,” Prof Adei said, adding: “We are yet to know the facts because we are not the investigators but the types of things that are being revealed about the amount of corruption [are mind-boggling].” National Communication Authority graft So far three appointees of former President John Mahama are being investigated by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for allegedly diverting some $4million belonging to the National Communications Authority (NCA). The three appointees, according to Information Minister Mustapha Hamid, conspired with a private citizen to commit the act. The former Mahama appointees being investigated, as named by Mr Hamid in an interview with Joy FM’s Kojo Yankson on Wednesday, 24 May, include Mr Eugene Baffoe-Bonney, former Board Chairman of the NCA; Mr William Tevie, former Chief Executive Officer of the NCA; and Alhaji Osman, former Deputy National Security Coordinator. Their conspirator, according to Mr Hamid is one George Oppong. Mr Hamid said they engaged in the graft in connection with a contract between the Mahama administration and an Israeli company, NSO Group Technology Limited, in which the latter was to supply eavesdropping gadgets worth $6 million. The equipment were meant to help the government of Ghana monitor the calls of suspected terrorists. In the course of the transaction, Mr Hamid said a local agent – Infraloks Development Limited – charged $2million as facilitation fee, bringing the total amount to $8million. According to Mr Hamid, National Security, which did not have the funds for the equipment, allowed the NCA, which supervises the use of such equipment, to fund the project. The NCA top officials, he revealed, withdrew $4 million from the NCA’s kitty but gave only $1million to the Israeli firm. The surplus, according to Mr Hamid, was deposited into the personal accounts of Mr George Oppong, who fronted as an agent of Infraloks Development Ltd. He said Alhaji Osman orchestrated the entire deal. According to Mr Hamid, demands by the Israeli firm to be paid the $5 million balance after the Mahama administration lost power in the December 2016 elections prompted the new Akufo-Addo government to probe the transaction after which the graft was detected. Mr Hamid said: “They took $4 million from NCA accounts and paid $1 million to the Israeli company and then deposited $3 million in the accounts of the local agent, one Mr George Oppong, and proceeded to share the $3million among themselves.”

The pressing danger here is not that the Gen- Sec of the party and, by extension the whole communication team of party gets eclipsed with the behavior of ignorant. It is passivity in the face of petty foolishness that certainly invites more consequential variety.

In a civilized country a thorough investigation will follow. What was the soldier doing in that community? Why was he alone? Who sent him? Was he doing a job that the Ghana police was incapable of doing? If you have a low IQ, and you think these questions are irrelevant, then encourage the Ghana military to repeat they did (send a lone soldier into a community on edge)

Is he trying to tell us all these are the plans of NDC to make the country ungovernable? Every Ghanaian knows that the issue of mob actions and killings are not new. What the country needs now are sensible and constructive ways to assist the police and other security agencies to deal with this problem. We need all hands on deck to instil discipline through civic and public education on rule of law and respect for one and another.

Do we know how many innocent people have been killed through this instance justice brutality?

I wrote an article some years back against this instance justice culture in Ghana and about 95% of the comments were for instance justice and some people insulted me and even accused me of being an armed robber. I warned Ghanaians about this and we should not forever forget about this atrocity.

The government should erect a statute of Captain Mahama at where he was murdered for the People of this town to never forget what they have done and Parliament should pass a law against INSTANT JUSTICE that should carry a death sentence if that particular incident results in death.

Where JFK was killed in Dallas has now become a Tourist spot and where Captain Mahama was killed should be like that and his memory should be associated with the elimination of this social canker in Ghana called INSTANT JUSTICE. Captain Mahama's death should not be in vain.

According to the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt Gen Obed Boamah Akwa, Capt. Maxwell Adam Mahama and the military detachment at Upper Denkyira West in the Central Region were not there to protect illegal miners. The Chief of Defence Staff has insists the soldiers were officially assigned to the area. He emphasised that their presence in the area was “sanctioned” by the military high command with the knowledge of the defence ministry. The CDS fell short of telling Ghanaians what exactly soldiers in Denkyira Oboasi are doing but credible evidence on the ground shows the soldiers are in Denkyira Oboasi guarding a Chinese Mining Company plying their nefarious activity mining in a prohibited forest reserve. My investigations across the country indicate that, GAF personnel active support to illegal mining activity in Ghana is still prevalent. Currently, GAF personnel are still active guarding Chinese Galamseyers in a prohibited Forest around Kolgo area in the Upper East Region.
So, from what the CDS is saying, it means the military high command sanctioned the protection of illegal miners in a prohibited forest reserve and, once the military has sanctioned such activity, it makes the whole galamsey operation in the forest reserve legal. My goodness, what a stupid CDS. This can only happen in Ghana where university graduates are useless. I suspect the CDS is a university graduate. That is why he is that stupid. Anyway, are Ghanaian soldiers trained to guard Chinese mines in Ghana.

The Captain's cruel death is really sad. But as you are aware, this is a common practice in countries where systems don't work. Ghanaians no longer believe in the police service. Even if the guy was suspected of being an armed-robber, he ought to have been sent to the Police station or the Ahemfie for further interrogation. However, because the people thought that the police would not do a diligent work, they took the law into their own hands to administer what in their eyes, constitutes justice. How many times have instant justice by lynching suspects to death not happened in Ghana? More than several, I suppose. Kejetia, Makola, Kotokroba etc have witnessed these scenes on countless occasions. This case, sad as it is, has become a high profile one because of who the victim is. As a people, we need to renew our mindsets. We need to allow the laws to work. That also means that the police and the judicial service must practice with an honest and a responsible mindset. No bribery, no corruption! In Ghana now, everything is about money. People don't respect politicians, traditional rulers, the clergy etc anymore. We only respect those who have money, irrespective of how it was acquired. Nothing seem to be working in Ghana. Sometimes I ask myself; what can I account for as being my contribution to promote the quality of life of people? In other words, after retirement, I will ask myself; what did I use my life for? If we wait till we are old, weak and exhausted, my fellow citizens, we are finished. We talk about Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, William Wilberforce, Abraham Lincoln, Alfred Nobel, Madam Theresa etc. No one remembers how many children they had or how rich they were but rather, their contribution to life for you and me. In the end, it is not how much money we had or how many houses we built or how many wives/husbands, girlfriends/boyfriends and children we had. Rather the legacy in terms of values that we are able to bequeath to the future generations is what matters. How we can improve the lives of others. God will one day ask us what we used our time on earth for.

If Akufo Addo is not reminded about the seemingly uncaring attitude towards some of these security breaches, and the impunity on the part of the perpetrators is allowed to fester, chances are more people will eventually think that he is in agreement with the aberration. I read that those Delta 8 operatives were invited to the FS House. No statement was issued after the meeting. Sure, Awuku spewed some garbage, but that was it, and did not stop the attack aimed at the judge.

So Nketia mouths off! If this is what it will take for the president to wake up, so be it.

My heart felt condolences to the family of captain Mahama. May your soul rest in perfect peace.
This is an unfortunate gruesome act that must be condemned by all. In as much as we detest and are appalled by the actions of these killers who definitely must pay for their actions, I want to add my voice to the statement made by Dr. Otabil that what happened is part of our culture. Growing up in kaneshie a suburb in Accra it was the norm that when a thief was caught, people gathered to beat up on the thief. I witnessed that on several occasions and when I became matured enough, i also partook in it. It was fun to hear the shouts of "hajulor oo"! Or kronfuoo... we run out of the house holding sticks, rocks and any other thing to hurt the thief. This was the way of life. I have seen thieves lynched several times. I have seen thieves who had 6 inch nails knocked into the temple of their heads. I have seen thieves burnt to death with tires around their necks. I can go on and on. Growing up, one of the kids in my neighborhood was burnt to death when he was caught as an armed robbery. I could go on and on and on.... Truth be told this habit or whatever you call it of ours, starts right from our homes. YES OUR HOMES (most of the time). In most HOMES it is the norm to whip the living day light out of kids when they steal. I can't count how many times I got beaten for taking a piece of fish or bread. It didnt matter if I was hungry.. if we all will me honest and begin with our own self assessments we will realize that there's a lot that needs changing in our culture. The fact that you didn't experience these things I talk about doesn't mean that it's not true. And please understand that I am not advocating non discipline when children do wrong. It just makes me sick that we look at what has happened to Captain mahama and cast blame when in one way or the other we all are culpable. Please take time to really think about this before you crucify me. This to me is not a political issue. As a parent I'm finding that I have a problem with the way I sometimes discipline my children. How did that happen? Must have been from my up Bringing. My mom alwasy resorted to the cane or the laddle or the suppository (if you know what I mean) My prayer everyday is that God help me interact with my children in ways that are more loving and understanding. Until we can come to that place of honest self evaluation and determine to change such gruesome and inhumane acts as happened to the captain will continue. There's too of this happening in Ghana and it's time we stop. We need to allow the rule of law to handle such cases instead of taking matters into our own hands dishing out instant justice. If it wasn't our culture to always lynch thieves and the rule of law prevailed, the handsome captain will still be alive today. We are hurt because it's an innocent man. We are hurt because it hit too close to home. Time time to wake up. Time to be civilized. God bless.my homeland Ghana. Again my heart felt condolences to the mahama family. May the peace of God keep your hearts and minds at peace.
