I know the story very well because I know all the elements in the story. NDC under MAHAMA was soooooo corrupt it was even smelly. Because he was paying his way to become the executive director of Forest Services Division of Forestry Commission.

I always suspected collusion at the top of the Forestry Department to allow the historic destruction of our Forest Estates continue for so long.

But should we be surprised at all? All the previous 3 Administrations in Ghana have a hand in why the Forests have almost all disappeared, and we are now IMPORTING wood to supplement local demand. The various Administrations ignored our Forests and demoted its contribution to the lives of Ghanaians. Now, besides the loss of hundreds of products freely available in the Forests to localities, many Streams and wells that supported their lives, and had existed for centuries are literally dead, with some of the stream-beds totally dried up and invaded by weeds.

So, millions of Ghanaians who used to depend on those bodies of water for drinking water are now without any water, and are forced to buy partially processed sachet water brought from far outside their area.

Life has become many times harder for these folks, many of whom were already struggling to survive without jobs. Water that they used to have for free has to be bought, even as they have no jobs to earn much from. The land they cultivate food on has grown infertile, too, as no moisture is available in it. The Forests that were set aside to protect the headwaters for most of the streams are all destroyed, and the longer and ever intensifying droughts have exhausted the aquifers in many areas.

If anyone, like even from among our Chiefs, were to be that culpable, I would deem excusable a bit. But for a whole Forestry Official to be incriminated in such a scandal, nothing short of decades of jail-term and heavy fine and confiscation of properties must be inflicted upon him or her.

How could we be that stupid to allow such a gross malfeasance to persist for so long? In fact, we would be doing ourselves justice if we imposed hefty surcharges on all the former Heads and members of the Forestry Commission in the last 3 Administrations to use the proceeds in helping restore our Forests or, at least, to get rid of the illegal miners and timber operators in our Forests. Our Law Enforcement Agencies and their Judicial counterparts are all to blame too. That is because many cases of Forest destruction reaching them for adjudication are simply thrown to deepen their pockets illicitly.

This is the height of treasonous economic and social destabilization in the country! And we should all hold ourselves accountable for it.

Long Live Ghana!!!
