  planting for food failing because of unfair treatment of extension offices

  The idea of getting improved seeds to our farmers is commendable. However, the Honorable Minister must be very careful as those seed are being introduced to the farmers. If those seeds are coming from our own crop research institute with inherent "TERMINATOR GENES" they let's all welcome this program. Otherwise if the seeds are coming from MONSANTO, PIONEER, SYNGENTA, DUPONT, BAYER and the other multi-national seed companies this program must be avoided at all cost. This is simply because these companies will eventually hijack our food production system to their advantage. The most of the seeds these companies supply are GMO seeds. The patents allow them to render the seeds fruitless after the first generation. The major implication is that our farmers will have to buys from the seed supplies every season since they cannot save seeds from their previous crops. There are a whole lot of legal implications and as at now Ghana does not have the policies framework to broadly introduce GMO seeds to average Ghanaian farmers. Those guys interested in the controversies surrounding GMO seeds should read "The Seed of Contention" by Per Pinstrup-Andersen.

  The idea of getting improved seeds to our farmers is commendable. However, the Honorable Minister must be very careful as those seeds are being introduced to the farmers. If those seeds are coming from our own crop research institute with no inherent "TERMINATOR GENES" then let's all welcome this program.   I would search the internet for places to buy Ghana's improved seeds but to no avail...
  Finally I settled on buying Dupont Pioneer hybrid maize seed from Dizengoff at a high price of ghs356 (which increase or reduces depending on the prevailing dollars/ cedi rate because it is imported from USA)...
  I am educated to some extent and couldn't locate seedlings to buy, what about the predominantly uneducated farmers in remote farming communities.... Most even have no knowledge of improved seeds...
  They stick to "obaatanpa and agric" which seldom fetch enough income for them to become the "obaatanpa" they wish to become over their family....
  Enough of the statistics....
