CONGRATULATIONS to both Coach Appiah and the entire technical staff. They all did well. However, that the Stars dominated the way they did and the humiliating defeat they inflicted upon the Ethiopians is a testament to the weakness of the latter as a team. Surely, the Stars would have been tested and their weaknesses more exposed had they met a better team. This means that there's still more room for improvement.

A major weakness of the Stars was their tendency to hang on to the ball for too long. The most guilty was Jordan Ayew who substituted his older brother Andre. Hanging on to the ball unnecessarily is a sign of selfishness. Experience has repeatedly taught us that hanging on to the ball and attempting to dribble it towards the goal with the view to scoring oftentimes doesn't pay. One hardly succeeds.

Jordan Ayew exhibited that kind of selfishness during the World Cup tournament at Brazil 2014 when Ghana clashed with Germany. At one point when Jordan got the ball, he raced with it from the mid-field all the way towards Germany's goal, Asamoah Gyang and another Stars forward running abreast with him. At this time, the Germany defenders were clearly beaten and it seemed obvious that Ghana was going to score a third goal, as the score at that stage was 2-2. But because of his selfishness, instead of passing the ball onto his colleague Gyang or the other, Jordan decided to selfishly take on the Germany goalie and took the shot himself and miserably failed in his attempt to score. Had Jordan passed the ball onto Gyang or the other colleague, it was more certain that Ghana could have defeated Germany.

So, when Jordan was brought in to take the place of his older brother Andre in this Ghana-Ethiopia match and played the same selfish style of football, I began to wonder what the coaches and the technical staff are teaching our men. I strongly feel that if the players wouldn't listen and do what they are taught, then they must not be featured at all in those crucial tournaments. Because when they lose, it's the whole country that loses as we witnessed at Brazil 2014. Ghana must not tolerate and accommodate selfish players like Jordan Ayew.

It would be helpful if our players are seriously encouraged to watch successful teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Juventus, Baryern Munich, Manchester United, Arsenal and the like. These teams are so successful because the players listen to their coaches and apply on the field what they are taught. One thing that's so clear with their styles of play is that they don't hang on to the ball; they oftentimes adopt the one-touch pass style and their passes are most of the time accurate. Because of that they possess the ball, and a team cannot score goals if it doesn't possess the ball.
