The outgoing British High Commissioner to Ghana Jon Benjamin has lashed out at public officials over what he termed “far too much greedy and wanton corruption” in Ghana.

“We have seen far too much greedy, wanton corruption in too many spheres in government, in politics, public administration, in business, in traditional leadership, in football and in the media and there are too many levels from top to bottom,” the outspoken emissary said at a public event Saturday.

Mr. Benjamin lamented the fact that no one over the last decade has been prosecuted in the face of corrupt practices in the country, citing the arson attack at the Central Medical Stores two years ago as an example.

“I refer to highly padded single source contracts and unfairly awarded tenders. I refer to obvious conflict of interests by those using state positions to promote private business interest,” the diplomat decried.

He added: “I refer to numerous cases on which no action is taken such as the arson at the Central Medical Stores in early 2015 in which over four million Pounds worth of UK funded medical supplies were destroyed of which nobody, at least, yet has faced justice. Indeed, nobody and not a single person of any high standing has gone to jail for corruption in Ghana for more than a decade.”

Students came out of universities with ready made jobs. The same can not be said of today. It is disgraceful for an ex President of Ghana to blatantly attack an internationally recognized icon because of political or ideological differences. President Nkrumah liberated Ghanaians from British colonial tyranny. He built institutions such as the Tema Motorway that begins near President Kufour’s House at Tetteh Quarshie Exchange. President Nkrumah built model secondary schools, Teacher's Colleges, hospitals, universities, factories, harbors, modern townships, publishing houses, etc. These institutions constitute the foundations of democracy. It is an incontrovertible fact that none of the successive leaders has engaged in infrastructural development to the extent as President Nkrumah.
President Kufour is silent on the fact that during President Nkrumah's rule, the opposition (National Liberation Movement (NLM), engaged in violence and thuggery. There were assassination attempts; innocent school children lost their lives in bombing incidents. NLM wanted to divide the country. President Nkrumah fiercely defended the unitary structure of the country. He cultivated close interactions among various ethnic groups in the country. Today, Ghana is unified because of the foundations laid by President Nkrumah.

I personally know brilliant people, potential engineers, doctors, architects, historians, sociologists, etc., etc, who had all A's or One's in Arts and Science subjects but failed English and therefore had no chance of a promising future. Kwame Nkrumah stopped it when he became president - just one of his many, many achievements. Just "Skin Pain", President Kuffour.
