You have taken the wind off my sail. The writer should have dwelt extensively on the many tribal fights that go on over there. Who would want to work at any place where they always have violent clashes, burn houses and other property. I went to school with some people from your region but will not want to be there for their National Service. One time during one of such tribal clashes, the only Gynecologist who happened to be a southner had his car burnt because his driver was from a rival tribe. How many Gynecologists from the South or even North will want to accept posting there? Millions of Ghana Cedis are used to sometimes maintain peace in the region by government quartering soldiers and Police there every year. Such money could have been used to develop the region so you people need to stop the useless fights. The Gas and Asante people have many Chieftaincy and land disputes but this does not result in burning of property and fighting to kill people. They usually go to court but you people sometimes to solve things in the violent way.
Your people themselves don't love each other. The Kwahu towns come together to undertake projects to develop their area. If you see a community center at Kwahu, it was not put up by the government but by the community. They come together to renovate their schools. Why can't your people do same because it will benefit one tribe more. There is the saying that Heaven helps those who help themselves.
Your region has a lot of rich politicians but they do nothing to help the region. They even seldom visit. They have mansions in the South. Politicians from the South fight for projects and developments for their region. Koforidua had the worse water crisis in the South. When Hackman became Minister for works and housing, he solved the water problem and ensured that abandoned roads since the time of Kutu were completed. Your rich politicians think only of themselves, buy guns for the unemployed youth to fight for them. Is that not stupidity? Yes, they buy AK 47 for the youth instead of helping them have jobs.
I will use the Kwahu always as an example. A rich Kwahu person does not care building a school by himself only for his community. What about the rich in your area. You always want to depend on the government. It does not work that way anymore. Abedi's kids can build a stadium and name it after their father but will they do it? A Kwahu man will easily do that just for a name.
Some toilets have not been working there for 10 years. What are you people waiting for? What about the Common Fund given to each district every year used for? When government established SADA and GYEEDA to help the Northern sector, it were your own people from the Northern sector who embezzled the money. So who is neglecting your region?
You people need to come together and help develop your region. Yes you can do it. Ignore your politicians who only come to you when it is about election time.

Wow, Mr. Frank Agyena-Karikari, you've provided quite a load there!
Shows you've thought a bit about some of these things and can depend on life lessons/experiences to support what you say there.
We are much impressed with the story-line and details provided by Mr. Edward Adeti. In fact, we see a bit of self-criticism, for some of the woes in the region.
Sure, nobody will develop one's town if all one does is build mansions and spend all one's incomes in Accra and in other big cities, far away from your neck of the woods.
It ain't gonna happen!
Still, we must commend Mr. Adeti for taking up that challenge to highlight issues he thinks need addressing in order for the UE region to move forward. It is a wide-spectrum sociological, urban, and physical record, data points, if we may, of Upper East, today.
Mr. Adeti has made a mark for history.
Will the people, the Regional Coordinating Council, national government, etc., respond to the challenge, how, and when?
Those are good questions, you will agree.
Greetings!

I think you have placed too much emphasis on the fighting factor. Much as it is true that it is a debilitating factor there are other sides to the story. People who are old enough to know remember that the greatest Administrator Bolga has ever had was a southerner “Kofi Charlie” (that was his nick name. I don’t remember his real name) and one of the greatest administrators in Koforidua was Col. Minyila from Navrongo. When Col. Minyila was RC for the then Upper Region he dreamt of a stadium for each district capital. Bolga Stadium was partially completed and the National Inter-Regional Sports Festival in 1979 was held in Bolga. The final football match was played at the Bolga stadium.
But because the Ghanaian has no culture of maintenance the stadium together with the other district stadia like the one in Navrongo was never maintained and developed to the state which Mr. Adeti has described.
Another example he did not bring up is the PAGA CROCODILE POND. Since this tourist attraction has nothing to write home about. I went to school in the area in the early 1970s and a hotel was planned there. In 2010 when I visited there with my kids it was an eye sore. Nothing had changed, if anything it was for the worse.

we shd begin to look at the effects of our own actions on development. An helicopter doesn't need an airport to function. can the ppl of the upper east pay for the cost of the aircraft to carry sick ppl? how many regions have helicopters? paying something little for the ambulance is a great worry for the majority of ppl in this region.
we need to change our attitude towards development. no whining will help us. the regional hospital is undergoing expansion to make it an ultra-modern hospital that is capable of undertaking all the things ppl are referred to do in tamale and elsewhere. if anyone has lived in Bolga, he will notice the trouble authorities had to get the project started. the land was acquired in the colonial era yet today, ppl still come to ask for compensation before they will allow development of the hospital.
we want development from govt yet we don't want to part with anything. self help is important in development. the resources of govt are limited. govt cant get money to pay for the land and build infrastructure. so if we keep asking for compensation, the other regions that are willing to offer free land will get all the developments and we will continue to lag behind in development.
devt doesn't come in a vacuum. govt will play its part but the ppl must play theirs too. most often we use our poverty levels to be irresponsible. we are used to getting free things that we don't want to play any role in getting development. in this modern world, we cant win double.
before govt rolled out the one- district-one factory policy, a chief in the south had made the headlines by donating 40 acres of land for the project. this is positive thinking. the chief was just telling govt to come. can we see a similar thing happening in the upper east? so if govt in this situation wants to site a factory, obviously it will go to the south bcos we in bolga will ask for compensation. we cant eat our cake and have it. we should stop lamenting and be the agents of change in mentality for our ppl.
again, on the issue of using the stadium as a toilet. is it govt that has turned it to a toilet? is is not we the ppl of bolga who go there to shit? we must educate ourselves and live responsible lives. no one will solve our problems for us except us.
i however take consolation in the fact that you said and i agree totally, that "maybe it is time the individuals, both natives and strangers, started thinking less about themselves and their families and more about the tomorrow's welbeing of the land."
i rest my case

You have been so honest. Yes, the king from the south who ordered each paramount chief to release enough land for Akuffo Addo's ONE DISTRICT, ONE FACTORY is the Asantehene. Are the chiefs in Upper West regions ready for that? By the time they come together to release any land for any project, they will be behind the Asante and Kwahu whose land for the projects are already ready. Rich people from Upper East, learn how to undertake project, even if by yourselves alone. Government did not develop Kwahu. Most huge buildings in Kumasi were not built by the government.

They resettle else where as their measure of success. Nothing concerning the Upper East is worth their attention. I call them sodom and Gomorrah dwellers. Secondly, Bolga as capital has for the very first time had a true, befitting and deserving MP. May the successful youth of today turn a new leave and refuse to recognise or leave like the selfish old Sodom and Gomorrah dwelling folks
