Completely false! It is the JSS system by the PNDC which completely shattered our teaching/learning performance base.

Most of us were taught in our mother tongue from the Nursery through the Primary to the Secondary and it has never affected in anyway our proficiency in English language. On the other hand, I hope there's no idea that English language would be replaced as official language and lingua franca in Ghana. That would be a mistake in a situation where Ghanaian indigenous languages aren't evolving and that there's no project to find a way of developing them.

There will be no possibility to sidestep English language.

We find it so difficult to break away from the Anglophile mindset imposed on us during colonial rule.

English is a foreign language imposed on us by an accident of history. The majority of our people do not speak it, and those of us who speak it do not speak it particularly well. We do ourselves a great disservice as a nation sticking to English as the medium of instruction in our schools and as our official language.

Let us replace English with one of our indigenous languages as our official language. Let all our children learn to be literate in their mother tongues. Let us ensure that we use our indigenous languages as medium of instruction for our children for at least the first three years of schooling.

Let us appreciate the richness of our indigenous languages and stop aping the British. They had no business colonising us, and we have no business clinging to their language.

You are just like that funny shortsighted man Anthony Kwaku Amoah, who is unfortunately picked as the PRO of the GES which is made up of educated buffoons who don't have any realistic and solid ideas about how a nation with many languages can move forward without tribal sentiments either in the open or in the secret which could be detrimental to a nation's existence.

Further to wake you up from you one sided foolish and tribal bigotry way of thinking, you're commenting like Ghana tribes are ONE. Also with the many tribes and their different languages spoken in Ghana which one is the mother tongue to be taught in the classroom full of many pupils coming from many different tribes.

Why do you allow your primitive village mind to deceive you to believe Ghana is made up of ONE single tribe which a mother tongue? You guys foolishly forget yourselves that there is no single language accepted as a mother tongue of all the tribes in our nation. The constitution never give any room to accept that there is one single language which is a mother tongue of the many different pupils in a class coming from different tribes.

I will end by reminding you that if you want to see a united Ghana then don't forget the rights of the many other tribes, and only foolishly think of your tribe alone. When you share things with others, you don't take it alone and handle it the way you want. It's always good to consult all those involved before a decision is made so that there would be peace and understanding leading to progress and development. FOOLISH, PRIMITIVE AND LOW MENTALITY SO CALLED EDUCATED PEOPLE DESTROYING OUR EDUCATION!!!!

I'am not an Ashanti, but i speak Asante language.
Believe it or not, English is killing the development, and prosperity of Ghana, and we've to start now to revert to one of the many languages in Ghana, though it's going be hard, which is understandable.

In kenya, students are taught in both kiswahili and English, and any of these qualifies you to the university. You need to be in Kenya to know how intelligent their students are.

English is a unifier for us and that cant be down played. A country where some tribes think they are superior to others is not a place to toy with the idea of using a foreign language as an official language. Again our local languages have not been developed enough to be used in the present scientific and computer environment.

I reply to this as a medical doctor myself and a previous head of large teaching hospitals with medical students and medical interns. My own observation is that those very effective in their mother tongues were highly capable in the English language used in teaching too.
Yours is a wise advice.
Others may argue about cosmopolitan areas with many mother tongues - that will be another discussion. This is where wise and balanced parents come in to make sure their children master both speaking and reading in their mother tongue from home: even if the compromise at school due to the cosmopolitan nature, English is chosen as the medium of instruction.
