Akufo-Addo not committed to fighting corruption - Vitus Azeem

Anti-Corruption Crusader, Vitus Azeem has insisted that until the Akuffo-Addo led government revises its statement on corruption, its commitment towards the fight could be considered not enough.

“…Until we see the appropriate action we cannot yet conclude that it’s a demonstration of commitment. We have also heard statements like we are preparing to prosecute former public officials and the question we ask is it just former public officials you want to prosecute or you want to prosecute corrupt officials, so again for it not to be seen as targeting former public officials alone they need to revise that statement to say that we are prepared to prosecute any public official engaged in corruption,” he confirmed to Samuel Eshun host of the Gold Power Drive Monday.

President Akuffo-Addo in his address at the annual delegates conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Cape Coast over the weekend reassured Ghanaians that “every allegation about corruption against any official or member of my government will be investigated by the law enforcement agencies”.

He added that those who made allegations against government officials should be prepared to support them because nobody was going to get away with making allegations without providing proof.

But Mr. Azeem shot down the President’s assertions which sought to suggest that people should provide evidence with their allegations. He said it was on these bases that there are government institutions set up to investigate such claims “so if a private citizen has a shred of information there should be a way of maybe sending one person to find out if there is any credence to it but if you want the private citizen to provide all the necessary information for you prosecute then what is the use of these institutions that we set up?”
