Mahama confirms decision to contest NDC flagbearer position

Former President John Dramani Mahama has submitted to the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) his letter of intent to contest the leadership of the party in the upcoming NDC Presidential Primaries.

His declaration comes a day after calling on Former President Jerry John Rawlings to discuss the re-organisation of the party, the upcoming regional and national executive elections as well as the presidential primaries for the party.

Explaining his decision to contest, Mahama said, he has “pondered deeply and soberly on the socio-economic and political landscape of our country today, vis a vis the clear path we had started to build, aimed at positioning Ghana as a true middle-income country by modernizing our dilapidated social and economic infrastructure and gradually inculcating in the Ghanaian a sense of patriotism, self-belief and commitment to a One Ghana Agenda.”

He added that he has, “taken into consideration the groundswell of support, the never- ending calls and encouragement from a large section of our party elders, members of our party, supporters and Ghanaians from diverse backgrounds. I’ve prayed diligently about the task ahead, and I believe I owe a duty to God and my country to take our party back to government to right the wrongs of the past and to put an end to the cries of the people under the current dispensation.”

Mr. Mahama joins a lineup of aspirants including Nadowli Kaleo MP, Alban Bagbin; the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Sylvester Mensah; former Trade and Industry Minister, Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah; former Vice Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi and Cape Coast South MP, and Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, who declared their intent to contest for the slot earlier.



The NDC has slated December 7, 2018, for the election of its flagbearer for the 2020 presidential election.
