'Sex for Grades': We only targeted Gyampo, Butakor in Ghana - BBC

The BBC Africa Eye has revealed that contrary to reports that there were other lecturers captured in the sex for grades expose, the focus of the documentary in Ghana was solely on Prof. Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Butakor.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, the BBC Africa Eye explained that the team only resorted to using secret filming of the targets after substantive evidence was gathered.

"Our teams will only engage in undercover filming when there is significant and compelling prima facie evidence to justify this approach – such as first-hand testimonies of harassment, text message screenshots, or recordings by students,” said the Africa Eye team led by Kiki Mordi.

“We did not film any individuals in Ghana on whom we did not have substantive prima facie evidence prior to engagement. The two lecturers who appear in the film in Ghana were the only subjects for which secret filming was deemed appropriate. Secret filming in journalism is a last resort and the BBC has very strict Editorial Guidelines around this issue,” the team added.

Meanwhile, Professor Ransford Gyampo and Professor Paul Kwame Butakor have been interdicted by the University of Ghana following the "Sex for Grades" documentary.

A press statement copied to GhanaWeb stated that two lecturers will be invited by the Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee for investigations.

"Given that commitment, the Business and Executive Committee of the University has taken a decision to interdict Prof. Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor, the two lecturers featured in the documentary to allow for further investigations into the matter. In line with University regulations, the two will be invited by the Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee in the next few days to assist with further investigations into the BBC documentary," the statement read.

Signed by Public Affairs Director, Madam Stella A. Amoa, the statement added that the university will not shield any employee or student found to have engaged in sexual harassment or misconduct.

"No member of the University is considered above the law," the statement added.
