Mr. Kwabena Agyepong, the press secretary to the President and presidential spokesman, has taken a swipe at internet operators who are whipping up negative sentiments against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) by putting out false information about the country in their bid to paint it black.

In an exclusive interview with The Independent, in reaction to some news items on GhanaWeb, one of which was attributed to Mr. Victor Smith (READ)), special aide to former President Jerry John Rawlings. Mr. Agyapong slammed the credibility of the news items put out on that page and described them as fabrications and distortions, tailoured in a manner to suit the clandestine and political agenda of those behind them.

According to Mr. Agyepong considering the twists which are given to stories by the GhanaWeb page, there is clear evidence of mischief, grand design and a calculated attempt to create confusion and tension in the society by a section of the political class.

This, he said, is typified by a statement attributed to Mr. Victor Smith who described the recent durbar held by President John Agyekum Kufuor with the rank and file of the Ghana Armed Forces as an attempt to foil a military uprising.

"This is a vain attempt to cause disaffection for the President and sow seeds of discord within the rank and file of the Ghana Armed Forces," he said, adding that "this indeed is a very strange assertion."

Referring in particular to the rumour mill page of the web, the presidential spokesman said the stories are ?outright fabrications and unsubstantiated allegations," which are calculated only to tarnish the reputation of the NPP government.
