Former Black Stars and Bayern Munich defender, Samuel Osei Kuffour has stated that he was never interested in being the captain of the national team after Charles Akonnor.
According to the 2001 UEFA Champions League winner, the media reports that suggested that he was in a tussle with former VFL Wolfsburg's captain for the Black Stars captaincy before the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations in Mali were not true.
Speaking in an interview with GTV Sports Plus, he said he was only interested in the successes of the national team and was not chasing his personal glory.
“As a player, I was only interested in the success of the team.
“I was never interested in the Black Stars captaincy. I know there is a report which says I fought with CK Akonnor over the captaincy. It was never true.
“I was told about the decision but I told the team officials to consult CK Akonnor before because I don’t want a situation where there will be a division in the team.
“I always interested in the welfare of the team and not the captaincy,” he concluded.
