Ghana’s Parliamentary Select Committee member on Sports, Kobla Mensah Woyome, has described the Finance Minister’s refusal to mention government plans for sports as disappointing during Wednesday’s Budget presentation.
According to the Member of Parliament for South Tongu, the presentation of the statement clearly shows government’s unwillingness to develop sports disciplines in the country.
During Wednesday’s presentation, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta failed to touch on the passing of the Legislative Instruments on the National Youth and Sports Act which will be implemented next year despite being part of the statement, Woyome reiterated.
“After the previous government we had looked at the way to develop sports since it is a major factor in GDP growth through seminars and programs”, he said.
“There was no achievement in 2017 because if there was it would have been juxtaposed with what the past government did. There should have been plans on hosting other tournaments to generate foreign exchange but there was nothing like that”, he added.
“With this disappointment, the Select Committee will summon the sector Minister and his deputy in the coming days to come explain their failure to input the future of sports in the Statement”, Woyome stated.
