Former Black Stars and Hearts of Oak iconic superstar, Mohammed Ahmed Polo has revealed to Top sports that the appointment of coaches for the various national teams should base on merit.

In a one-on-one interview with Nana Yaw Asare, the host of Top FM sports show on Tuesday, Polo revealed that the current criteria for selecting coaches for the national teams in Ghana is based on favoritism.

He said this is not the best way forward for Ghana football. He, therefore, called on the Ghana Football Association to be fair in their appointment of coaches.

“A national team coach should be able to develop young ones to take over from the older ones,” he said.

Adding that “as such, they should have a local club of which they would be coaching to unearth talent.”

The outspoken coach mentioned the current assistant coach for the Black Stars, Maxwell Konadu of not having enough experience at the national level but has been given the position of a deputy coach for the senior national team.

Polo played for Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics. He was part of the 1978 Black Stars squad that won the African nations cup.

He played alongside Maama Acquah, Anas Seidu, Peter Lamptey and Robert Hammond who were known as "the fearsome five” in Accra Hearts of Oak. He also coached Hearts of Oak and now owns an academy called Golden Stars in Accra.
