Boxing championship to mark Republic day in Tamale

Accra, June 28, GNA - A special boxing championship is to be organised on Sunday, July 1 in Tamale as part of activities marking Ghana's 50th Republic Day Anniversary.

The event is being organised by Dade Boxing Promotion and would come off at the Tamale Veterans Village is also to celebrate the Golden Jubilee Independence celebrations. Mr Gideon Quartey, Chairman of the Accra-based boxing promotion syndicate told the GNA Sports on Thursday that the championship is part of efforts towards reviving the pugilistic sport in the Northern part of the country.

He said the event is geared towards identifying the potentials and to create the necessary the drive for the youth within surrounding communities to take up to the noble art of self defence. "This will also serve as a platform to educate the youth on social vices and to become good ambassadors of their communities," he added. Mr Quartey said boxers from the Northern and Upper West Regions will take part in the championships, with the possibility of extending it to the Upper East Region in future. He mentioned boxers such as Mohammed Issifu, Fuseini Sadick, Latif Sadick, Ben Yim and Paul Gyata among others who are billed to thrill fans.

The Chairman meanwhile has appealed to corporate bodies to support the event financially, which he described as the climax of Northern Region's sporting activities to mark Ghana's Golden Jubilee Independence Celebrations in March. The Chairman gave the assurance that Tamale Metropolis has the potential of achieving success in boxing if it is given the needed the support after successfully hosting the last two events organised by his outfit.

A special novice event will precede the major championships on June 30 to generate the expected interest and patronage. The event would be graced by the Northern Regional Minister, members of the Regional Co-ordinating Council as well as the Regional Sports Development Officer.
