Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Perry Curtis Kwabla Okudzeto has clarified the salary situation of former Black Stars Coach James Kwasi Appiah.

According to him, it is the Sports Ministry and not the Ghana FA that needs to pay Kwasi Appiah's outstanding salaries.

Coach Appiah who exited the role in January this year is at war with the Ghana FA for refusing to pay monies owed him which amounts to $185,000 and has threatened to drag the matter to FIFA level to demand his money from the country’s football governing body.

The Deputy Sports Minister speaking on Joy News’ Beyond the Lockdown Program provided clarity on the situation.

“There is a sponsorship package that goes to the FA. However the sponsorship package is channeled through the ministry and therefore as part of that, Coaches are paid from that, monies expended on national teams are paid from these sponsorship monies” Mr Okudzeto revealed.

“In certain cases, when the sponsorship money is not enough to pay for national teams and all that, government actually pays for these things” he noted.

Perry Okudzeto subsequently confirmed the monies owed Kwasi Appiah and revealed that there are certain issues that need ironing out before payment can be made. He however indicated that efforts are being made to make amends and bring closure to the matter.

“It’s been the case that before the termination of the contract of Mr. Kwasi Appiah, there have been some arrears. And those have arisen due to certain of issues that have come up in the last couple of months. The Ministry is in talks with Kwasi Appiah and once the issues are ironed out, he will be paid” he noted.
