Essien salutes John Terry

Former Ghana international Michael Essien has paid a glowing tribute to Chelsea legend John Terry, who announced his retirement from active football on Sunday.

The former England skipper has bowed out of the game after 23 years of senior action, his trophy haul including five Premier League titles.

Essien and Terry played together at Chelsea, helping the Blues win the 2012 Uefa Champions League in a dramatic final against Bayern Munich.

"All the best captain. New beginning and a new start and I wish you all the best in the next phase of your footballing career. You were one of the best leaders I ever played with. Thank you for the memories Georgie," Essien, one of several well-wishers, tweeted following Terry's big announcement.

Reports say Terry has called time on his career ahead of an imminent appointment as assistant coach of Championship side Aston Villa, who are set to name former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry as new manager.

The 37-year-old will not be new to Villa as he captained The Claret and Blue Army during a one-year stint with the club last season.

He made over 800 appearances in his career, winning 17 titles at Chelsea, with whom he plied his trade as a senior professional for 19 years.
