Villarreal have declared Emmanuel Lomotey unfit to join the Ghana U23 team for their 2020 Olympic Games qualifier against Togo.
The Ghana FA had sent an official invitation to the Spanish club for the 21-year-old.
But Villarreal in their response say the player is yet to make a full recovery.
Lomotey has not played for his club close to a month now having suffered an injury.
He is expected back in full-scale training this week.
But Villarreal do not want to risk the visionary midfielder over a long spell and have opted to keep him at the team's base to monitor his progress.
Ghana will host Togo in the first leg of the qualifying tie on December 18.
The Black Meteors will in a matter of days travel to Lome for the return encounter.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko is looking forward to augmenting his squad with some foreign-based players.
This is, however, a challenge as clubs are under no obligation to release their players since qualifiers for the Olympic Games is not captured under the FIFA dates for international matches.
