General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party [NPP], John Boadu has refuted claims that the Nana Akufo-Addo led government is fixing some faulty streetlights at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency to beef-up the party's chances of retaining the seat.
His denial comes after some constituency members chastised government for their failure to fix the street lights after several complaints to the responsible authority over the years.
The street lights prior to the bye-election on Thursday have been fixed with some roads within the constituency under construction and rehabilitation.
In an interview on NEAT FM’s morning show dubbed ‘Ghana Montie’, John Boadu who is affectionately called ‘Uncle JB’ explained that a contract for the streetlights was already awarded.
“It’s unfortunate that this exercise is happening during the bye-election time. Government has already awarded the contract when the last MP was alive. The people there deserve a lot,” he told host Kwesi Aboagye.
1,800 Energy-Efficient Street Lights To Be Installed In Accra
A total of 1,800 energy efficient street lights are to be installed in the Ga East and West municipalities in the Greater Accra Region.
The new street lights are to replace existing high-energy consuming street lights as part of efforts to save energy and enhance security in those areas.
Dubbed the Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) project, it is one of six major projects under the five-year, $489-million Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) signed between Ghana and the United States (US).
Project
The $2.4million EEDSM project is aimed at reducing demand, especially during peak periods. It will also allow electricity supply to be expanded to meet the increasing demand in a timely, low-cost and sustainable way.
Apart from replacing the street lights, 1,000 households across the country will have their electronic gadgets assessed to ensure that they are energy efficient.
