The leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo, says he would increase the betting tax to 60% of wins if he had his way.
On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) announced a 10% tax on all lottery and sports betting winnings, with betting companies subjected to a 20% withholding tax on gross gaming revenue.
The decision has fueled public disgruntlement as well as doubts over whether it could have a significant economic impact.
Although the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have disclosed through their manifestos that the betting tax will be scrapped, Kofi Akpaloo of the LPG has stated in an interview on Hitz FM that he would increase the tax on betting to 60% instead if he had his way.
According to him, the increment of the tax on betting will discourage a lot of youth from continuing to bet and encourage them to work hard and earn money in the right way.
“If I had my way, I would increase the betting tax to 60%. I want to give them jobs to do and then they can focus on the job. Unless you’ve not been there before. I have been there before, so I’m talking out of experience,” he disclosed.
