General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, has explained why referees in the country are paid in arrears.

Answering questions after appearing before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, the GFA General Secretary indicated that paying referees after, and not before, matches is the standard practice all over the world.

He added that the arrangement is because referees assigned to matches can always be changed.

“Per convention and across the world, from FIFA, CAF, and every MA, referees are to honor the matches before it is calculated over a period and then they are paid. So we pay them per period, that is, we pay them in arrears.

“Paying referees before matches is not done anywhere because a referee can be changed [before a match],” GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo said.

During the engagement with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Prosper Harrison Addo disclosed that Ghana Premier League referees are paid GHS 1,100 per game.
