James Kwasi Appiah has been one of Ghana’s best coaches in recent years, according to the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah.

He claims that the Ghana Football Association's decision to fire Kwesi Appiah was unjustified.

Kwasi Appiah’s tenure with Ghana saw him become the first Ghanaian coach to lead the Black Stars to the World Cup, achieving this milestone in the 2014 tournament in Brazil. However, a group-stage exit brought an end to his stint as coach.

Appiah returned in 2017, taking charge of Ghana once again and leading the team to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where Ghana was eliminated in the round of sixteen.

When Kurt Okraku assumed leadership of the Ghana Football Association months later, he dismissed Appiah and appointed C.K. Akonnor as Ghana’s new coach.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Ben Nunoo Mensah stated that Kwasi Appiah’s achievements make him one of the best managers ever to take charge of Ghana.

He expressed disappointment over the manner of Appiah’s dismissal and suggested that the GFA should have considered reappointing him for a third stint when the opportunity arose.

“I think that, over the years, Kwasi Appiah has been one of Ghana’s best coaches, and it was sad we let him go in that manner. Also, when there was an opportunity to appoint him again, we overlooked him,” he. said.

Kwasi Appiah led Ghana to a fourth-place finish at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Now managing Sudan, he defeated Ghana in November 2024 to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
