They were just girls with big dreams. Small feet on dusty streets, a worn-out ball in hand, hearts full of hope, but no way of knowing that one day, their names would be etched in the history of African football.

For many of these players and coaches, the road to greatness was never straight.

They battled limited opportunities, scarce resources, and cultural expectations, often playing in silence while dreaming of stadiums filled with cheering fans.

Some had to leave home, travel across borders, or fight for every chance to prove themselves on the pitch.

These early photos capture not just faces, but the spirit, determination, and resilience that would one day transform them into icons of African football.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah

Chaney, as her mates call her, made her first mark at the 2025 WAFCON, debuting for the Black Queens and helping Ghana secure bronze in her first major tournament.

Lamia Boumehdi

In Morocco, Lamia Boumehdi broke barriers by leading TP Mazembe Women to their first-ever CAF Women’s Champions League title in 2024, making history as the first female coach to lift the trophy with a team outside her homeland.

Ghizlane Chebbak

Ghizlane Chebbak started as a young girl with a ball bigger than her dreams and went on to captain Morocco to two WAFCON finals and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Asisat Oshoala

Asisat Oshoala, one of Nigeria’s great players, turned her backyard dreams into a record six CAF Player of the Year awards.

Her exploits at Barcelona made her one of the most lethal finishers in football.

Desiree Ellis

In 2022, Ellis would lead South Africa to its first-ever WAFCON triumph. Before that, she earned 32 caps for her country, scoring goals and even captaining the team before retiring from international football in 2002.
