Algiers, July 20, GNA - Africa Games heptathlon defending champion, Ghana's Margaret Simpson said before she began her seven event competition on Friday that she wants to win the gold medal for her son.
"I want to win the title for Alexander Senya, my one year old son and I shall work hard to achieve that objective," she said. Margaret who lives in Mauritius, while Senya lives in the Ashanti Regional capital of Kumasi in Ghana said a gold medal for her son would be one way of compensating him for her absence from home.
She said her son was named after the father and a dedication of the medal to Alexander Senya will be a present to both husband and son as they bear the same name.
The defending champion said she began training for the Games three months after 'putting to bed' and had participated in some competitions ever since, though she did not win any.
She said she was back in shape after tasting motherhood and would conveniently combine both responsibilities and ensure that her career was not abridged prematurely.
On her long absence from her son, Margaret said she had built a life size portrait of herself, which is kept at a strategic place in their living room in Ghana, which the son sees regularly and touches often to keep her in his memory.
Margaret, who said she would return to Mauritius from Algiers without visiting Ghana added that "I hope Alexander will recognise me when I eventually get home.
"He is very comfortable with my husband and my mum," she added.
