Sports journalist Saddick Adams has called on the government to put measures in place to combat the menace of illegal mining locally referred to as galamsey.

According to him, there is no need for Ghanaians to give the government time to take action after the 2024 general elections, as the menace continues to destroy water bodies and put lives at risk.

The Angel FM sports journalist warned that if the government fails to heed their grievances, the state of the water bodies might get worse and pose severe challenges to the nation.

“I don't think that I even care about the elections personally. I care about what's happening to the water bodies. When should we take action? Should we allow for elections to be done? What happens if there are political figures in the next government, be it NPP or NDC? And because elections have happened, they will stop.

"There is no correlation, so it is absurd to suggest that we should wait for elections. What is the correlation between the destruction of water bodies? Because we will not get water in the next two months, and water is more important to me than politics and the elections. All of us here can choose not to vote, but you cannot choose not to drink,” Adams told GhanaWeb during the protest.

The #StopGalamsey protest is a group of Ghanaians who are aggrieved by the destruction of water bodies by illegal mining activities, calling on the government to take decisive actions to resolve the issue.

The demonstration will last for three days, spanning from October 3 to 6, 2024.

Religious leaders, political figures, and state institutions have all added their voices for the galamsey menace to end.

The Organised Labour has served notice that it will embark on a strike on October 10, 2024, if the government fails to respond to the calls.
