Former Ghana international, Michael Essien has opened up about his decision to get involved in youth development, highlighting the influence of the Right to Dream network and his desire to support the next generation of African footballers.

Speaking in an interview with FIFA, Essien revealed how a personal connection played a key role in his involvement with FC Nordsjaelland and its wider development philosophy.

“I knew the former owner, Tom Vernon,” he told FIFA. “He asked me if I would be interested in coming here. I think what motivated me was the FCN (FC Nordsjaelland) and Right to Dream connection."

Essien explained that the presence of many young African players within the setup made the opportunity even more meaningful, particularly given his own journey from Ghana to the top level of world football.

“We have a lot of African boys here, so I thought it would be nice to come on board and help out with the young ones because they are our future, so we need to give them all the advice and experience they need.

The former Chelsea midfielder added that nothing compares to seeing a player you have helped along the way reach new heights.

"You always feel joy when you see a young one that you've worked with represent their country."
