It is very right to accord Nkrumah all the plaudits he deserves as our greatest ever leader in history. However, we should not also feel shy to condemn some of his negatives too. After all he was human and he did make errors. One of his biggest errors, for instance, was banning all other political parties and maintaining CPP as the ONLY party. Ghana was therefore a one-party state between 1963 and 1966 and it was one of the main factors that triggered the first ever coup d'etat in Ghana, resulting in his overthrow, to be followed by 15 long years of political instability until 1981 when Rawling managed to restore stability. His democratic credentials were very weak. He capitalized on CPP's overwhelming majority in parliament to enact and backdate laws just to incriminate people he felt were against his policies and leadership style. I don't want to dig deep into his economic management now but it is on record that the cedi started to depreciate during his tenure even though Ghana did not owe a pesewa at the time he became president. Let's be objective in assessing Nkrumah's leadership. he too was one of our presidents.

Kwaku forgot to add that Kwame Nkrumah formed the Ghana Black Star (that was the original name of the national football team) and used the team to popularize Ghana and African football and Independence. During his time, Pele of Brazil, visited Ghana with his team Santos, and so did Real Madrid, the great Muhammad Ali and other sporting greats.
