After the defeat, the battle for the title was then between Abedi and Oppong Weah who was an underdog because of Liberia's failure during the Afcon. Otto Pfister through Abedi Ayu caused the team's downfall even though they were tipped the best those days. Anthony Baffoe knew it wasn't right but couldn't reject it because of Opana's influence. In the absence of Abedi, Tony Yeboah would have scored 2 goals in the finals as Captain. Kwesi Appiah lost the captaincy to Abedi, fair enough because a change was needed, only for the handlers of the national team to involve themselves in a worse captaincy issue in the most important game of Ghana.
