While I don’t want to sound insensitive to the plight of anyone who needs financial support, I just can’t understand what this man is talking about. He participated as an athlete for 4 years and closed his career since 1979. He was far younger in 1979 and didn’t do anything for himself within the last 46 years? And now, he wants to blame the government for neglecting him? I don’t think it’s the obligation of the government to commit to helping every athlete who ever represented Ghana in any sports. Even those soccer players like Osei Kofi who won the African Cup of Nations do not expect the government to take care of them in their old age.

We seriously have to have a national discuss on these issues. Our sportsmen, especially the modern day footballers and Co should never come crying about neglect. When they represent the nation once, they exact from the nation the entire working life salary of other public servants like teachers, nurses, office staff and doctors. Why should their care be on the government when they are no longer competing for the nation? When you exact your due, your well being should be part of that. If they have to be cared for in later life, then it should be a national policy to care for all public servants in their old age. Some countries like Trinidad and Tobago does that.
It's my understanding that governments in the Oddington days did mot honour promises to successfull athletes. If that's what is owed this man, I will beg JDM to look at what is owed him in current value and do him well.
