‘He should have realised he wouldn’t be able to handle the team’ – Nyaho-Tamakloe on Otto Addo

Former Ghana Football Association chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has insisted that Otto Addo should have taken responsibility for the Black Stars’ struggles and resigned long before he was eventually sacked.

Addo was relieved of his duties following Ghana’s poor performances in the March international window, which included a 5-1 drubbing by Austria and a 2-1 loss to Germany.

But for Nyaho-Tamakloe, the warning signs had emerged much earlier, particularly after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, their first absence in over two decades.

“After he failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, I said to myself that he cannot handle the Black Stars,” he told Graphic Sports.

“The decision is right and long overdue. He should have realised he wouldn’t be able to handle the team and resigned after failing in key matches, rather than waiting to be sacked.”

While Addo did guide Ghana to qualification for the 2026 World Cup, securing the nation’s fifth appearance at the global tournament, Nyaho-Tamakloe believes that achievement did not mask deeper issues within the team.

With the Ghana Football Association expected to appoint a new head coach in the coming days, attention now turns to rebuilding the squad ahead of friendlies against Mexico and Wales. Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama for the World Cup.
