Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has reportedly directed all regional and district commanders to assign armed police escorts to clubs competing in the Ghana Premier League, following the tragic killing of Dominic Frimpong.

The decision comes in the wake of a shocking armed robbery attack on Berekum Chelsea’s team bus.

The club was returning from a league fixture against FC Samartex when masked gunmen ambushed the vehicle on a highway.

According to reports, the attackers blocked the road and opened fire on the bus as it attempted to reverse to safety.

In the chaos that followed, players and officials fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire.

Frimpong, a 20-year-old winger, was struck in the head and later died in hospital, becoming the only confirmed fatality from the incident.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves across Ghanaian football, with the Ghana Football Association describing the young player as a “promising talent” whose death represents a huge loss to the sport.

This is not an isolated case. Similar attacks on club buses have been recorded in recent years, raising growing concerns about the safety of players and officials traveling for domestic matches.

In response, the latest police directive is seen as an urgent attempt to restore confidence and ensure the protection of clubs across the country as authorities aim to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
