Apart from the fact that the Nigerian star players didn't present themselves to play in the early stages of the qualifiers, and turned up late and unable to recoup lost early grounds, the group qualifiers was tainted and rigged in favour of SA by CAF and its Souh African President, Motsepe, by ensuring that 7 put of the 10 games (supposed to be 5 home and 5 away) were home for South African.

Indeed, Lesotho and Zimbabwe home games were played inside South Africa giving South African more advantages than the visiting "home" teams. There was strong politics in that group which the Nigerian FA could not play or compete with their SA counterpart. Nigeria was and still is a better team than SA and these attributes showed in the recent AFCON, and even more vividly in FIFA rankings with Nigeria at 26th and South Africa at beyond 60th.

At the end of the day South Africa qualified and not Nigeria. Such questions will be raised when Cape Verde perform poorly and observers will question why the beat almighty Cameroon to the automatic qualification slot in their qualifiers group.
