Three Lions midfielders Kobbie Mainoo and Declan Rice
Legendary English footballer, Wayne Rooney has called for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to start England’s Round of 32 tie against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Concerns have been raised by fans and pundits about Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice’s lack of impact in the opening three group-stage games, amid ongoing injury concerns.
While his midfield partner Jude Bellingham has been instrumental, Rice has not lived up to expectations, with reports suggesting he is nursing discomfort.

Speaking ahead of England’s knockout game against DR Congo, Rooney advised Three Lions head coach Thomas Tuchel to make the bold decision to start Mainoo over the Premier League winner.
According to him, the Manchester United midfielder’s ball control and ability to recover possession in tight areas make him a suitable replacement for Rice’s role.
Rooney explained on The Wayne Rooney Show aired on BBC:
"I'd go with Declan Rice sitting, and I'd go with (Kobbie) Mainoo and Jude Bellingham. Mainoo can give you a bit of both, but in tight areas, that's Mainoo's biggest strength, his feet in tight areas, and then he has got a little pass. I think he's the only one who is capable of doing that in those tight areas."
